iPhone 5 still hugely popular in South Africa
Apple’s iPhone turns 10 today, marking a decade of advancements in the smartphone industry.
But while the iPhone 6, 6s, and 7 offer many improvements over older models, the iPhone 5 remains extremely popular in South Africa.
Gumtree SA’s Head of Core Claire Cobbledick said the iPhone 5 – released in 2012 – is one of the most commonly searched for and purchased items on Gumtree
“It’s not surprising that it was one of the most popular phones ever released by Apple,” said Cobbledick.
She said eBay.co.uk, the British branch of Gumtree’s parent company, sees 22 searches for the iPhone 5C every minute.
The average iPhone 5 sells for R3,300 on Gumtree and there are more than 4,000 available at any given time.
Used iPhone 6s models are currently selling at an average of R8,200, said Gumtree.
“This is an iconic brand and iconic piece of technology, and demand will remain high for some years,” said Cobbledick.
